Since 1996, I have led and co-led the
creation of close to twenty public art works
in the greater Chicago area. Most are murals of handmade
clay tiles; some combine handmade tiles with broken
commercial tile.
I work with architects, schools, community agencies
and others to create public works that will reflect
issues and ideas relevant to the community where
the public work will be installed. To design and
fabricate the work, I involve local people, such
as students and teachers.
Working with these groups, I help them
identify stories, dreams and myths that resonate
with their experiences. While honoring the
diversity of participants, I urge them to get below
the surface to universal themes important to them.
The resulting images, carved in clay, enable the
group to see their lives expressed in terms of these
universal themes. Hopefully, the installed work becomes
a meaningful new dimension in the community.
