The Orthogenic School, affiliated
with the University of Chicago, is a residential facility
for youth. I worked four months with art teachers and
students to produce this mural for the dining room.
The mural and the process of creating it were designed
to parallel or replicate the students' journey through
the school. Thus, instead of making tiles to fit a
specific plan, the design evolved along the way. Students
began by creating a large tile about themselves, which
were then arranged to approximate a "community".
They augmented the mural's theme of journey by adding
tiles in the shapes of their hands and of birds. Remaining
spaces were filled with additional tiles made by other
students and staff. An Illinois Arts Council grant
helped fund this project. |
