Public Work:
Golden Spiral of Fire-Air-Water-Earth (2001)
170-square-foot clay tile mural on courtyard ground and retaining wall
Oak Ridge School
Palos Hills, Illinois

Golden Spiral of Fire-Air-Water-Earth is used as an outdoor classroom for storytelling. The overall design is a spiral based on the Fibonacci curve. It is divided into sections which follow the curve of the spiral. Each section of tiles features one of the elements, with the pictures arranged to form a figure. Images students carved and painted on the tiles were based on their own drawings of the elements and creation stories. My intent was that both process and design would create an atmosphere that would stimulate storytelling. An Illinois Arts Council grant helped fund this project.
