Clay has been my medium of choice since
dreams about clay objects in the mid 1980s led me
to make art. By turning to clay to sculpt my dreams,
I was able to extend my meditation on them. Clay’s
earthiness and responsiveness enables me to shape
the textures and forms I envision, which fire turns
rock hard.
All of my art is an attempt to examine
divisions, opposing forces, and the struggle for
healing. In some way each work is a metaphor for
the divide I experience in myself when I ignore the
truth. This disconnecting not only cuts me off from
pain, but also from compassion and the ability to
transform. It seems to me that my tendency to split
from truth is common to others as well and has marred
much of human history. So for me, artmaking is a
force for making connections between fragments, between
the past and the present, and between opposing forces
of nature.
